I wouldnt mind at all putting in 1 or 2 passwords each time to have thunderbird integration, but it would be great to just be able to put in my mailbox password on a day to day basis, from my home computer, from inside of thunderbird (or a browser for that matter). I would still opt to force users to put in at least 1 password to access their proton mailbox, opposed to how most normally use thunderbird, 1 click/logon to all accounts. Perhaps a creative plugin inside of thunderbird (the ‘Neutron’ project was mentioned, not sure how that works), but if somehow a plugin inside of thunderbird could encrypt/decrypt emails to Protons standards, well that would be amazing to be honest.
But i would really love some sort of thunderbird integration.
Im not expert, but it seems imap would ruin the security here. In fact i can barely keep up with all the keys. I totally agree not to compromise security, but also agree that trying to explain private/public keys to contacts is a losing battle. So please respond in kind by permitting that same option when it comes to our choice of application download. Your service is predicated upon privacy and security.

Please…the least you could do is provide an exclusive APK file for download like other tech companies whom respect a consumer’s right to privacy do-Do you expect us all to believe that would be asking too much of ? The intrusions Google still permits into a person’s online activity are the very reasons why I don’t use Google Play and considering the fact that the main premise of the website and service is to provide private and secure communications. There are far better options out there for consumers, of which do not violate personal privacy. I haven’t even used the Google search engine in close to a couple of years now-nor do I ever plan to. I hate Google and I don’t use Google Play.

Once it would be open-source mail server package, available for free installation on thousands of servers, with internationally standardized and supported encrypted e-mail retrieval protocol to access it, it would significantly help to make BigBrother’s life more miserable…. One ProtonMail, even when based in Switzerland, is, as service, vulnerable to rogue BigBrother goverments (like the US one) attacks by the fact, that it’s one service. And it’s also way to spread the ProtonMail idea to thousands of implementations of secure e-mail services in the world, which the BigBrother will have hard time to cope with. Of course it will be long run and of course, after new standard eventually published, there will be yet needed time for developers of e-mail clients to implement it, but, from long-term view, it’s the best way.
Rather then developing the new protocol completely separately, I think best way would be to try to get in touch with IMAP working group of IETF and help to incorporate the necessary features into new version of IMAP. So, in principle, there is needed to design new standard protocol like IMAP, but with ability to deal with encrypted inboxes. Problem is, that IMAP, as is currently, is not designed to deal with encrypted inboxes. It would definitely increase usability of Protonmail, to have access to Protonmail inbox from native mail clients, by protocol like IMAP over SSL. We do not offer POP3 support, but ProtonMail Bridge downloads all your emails into your email client, and you can export them from there. ProtonMail Bridge uses the SMTP and IMAP protocols. To use ProtonMail Bridge, you need any paid ProtonMail plan.
